The University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, through the Spanish Bank of Algae (BEA), managed by the Canarian Science and Technology Park Foundation of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and the Bank of Algae and Cyanobacteria of the Azores (BACA) of the University of the Azores, in collaboration with the Sociedad de Promoción Económica de Gran Canaria (SPEGC), organize the Webinar “Seaweed Cultivation and Carbon Sequestration”, in the framework of the REBECASeaweed y REBECA-CCT projects.
The session will be aimed at presenting the current initiatives on open-sea macroalgae cultivation, its processing and the development of biomass applications that are being carried out in Europe. In addition, the relevant role of macroalgae culture collections in the current climate change scenario will be discussed.

Mar Fernandez-Mendez. Chief Scientific Officer, Marine Researcher, Seafields, UK; Junior Professor, Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research, Germany. Aquafarming Sargassum in the open ocean to produce seafood, raw materials and Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR).
Rui Pereira. Head of Seaweed Division at A4F – Algae for Future. EU Eklipse report – Macroalgae cultivation and ecosystem services.
Juan Luis Gómez Pinchetti. Full professor at University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Scientific Director of BEA. Algarden, Innovalga and SeaWheat Projects as promoters of seaweed cultivation actions in the Canary Islands.
